FAQ
Are the coaching sessions conducted in person or online?
The answer is either/or. Some of the doc’s I coach prefer phone appointments, as they’re busy and find Zoom too inconvenient. Many love the face-to-face opportunity. I’m good, either way. I do what I can to oblige the doctors I serve.
What do doctors most often want to coach about?
It would be easier to answer what the don’t want to coach about. They don’t want to coach about medicine. Virtually always, the topics revolve around ‘life in medicine.’ That’s why my tag and focus is trying to ‘hold everyday life up to The Light.’ Burnout, change, family, faith, direction, retirement. All those and other topics are fair game.
How long does a typical coaching engagement last?
Many doctors coach with me for between six and nine months. I have several doc’s who coach with me every week, and have done so for many years! The length of time we spend coaching is totally dependent on the desires and needs of the doctor.
Is there a charge or fee for coaching?
Yes. Coaching fees are set and agreed to by the CMDA collective of certified coaches, and are well-below the fees normally associated with executive coaches. My hourly rates are adjusted according to frequency of coaching during a given month, and average $200/session.
If you're not a doctor, how can you 'coach' doctors?
If you were walking down the street, and you encountered someone who had fallen into a hole, you would certainly want to help them get out of that hole. If they asked you, “Have you ever been in a hole before?” or if they assumed that because you had never been in a hole, you have no idea how to help them? They would be incorrect. I am certified as a PCC (Professional Certified Coach) with the International Coach Federation, the gold-standard certifying body for professional coaches. My specific focus is Christian doctors, and helping doctors deal with life is my passion.
How is coaching different from counseling?
The answer is: VERY different. In a counseling session, the expert in the room is the counselor, who gives directions. The expert is the counselor. In a coaching relationship, the expert is the person being coached. The coaching journey is about discovering and creating new awareness about what is possible, what the next steps might be, and how to move forward. Coaches are trained to ask probative, open-ended questions.
Can I cancel the coaching program if it's not working for me?
Of course. I do ask for a minimum three-month commitment in a coaching engagement, as it’s pretty difficult to see lasting change or movement in less that 12 or 13 weeks in a life. But anyone engaging in my coaching can stop at any point, with no questions asked. I’m here to serve.
